Analysis of clickbait practices, editorial pressures and the transformation of journalism in the digital attention economy
Digital transformation has profoundly changed the way information is produced, distributed, and consumed in Albania, making digital performance, clicks, shares, and interaction, one of the main factors influencing the editorial priorities of online newsrooms.
The report “Beyond Clicks: Online Media, Algorithms and the Crisis of Credibility in Albania”, prepared by the Albanian Center for Quality Journalism with the support of the Audiovisual Media Authority, analyzes the relationship between digital performance and editorial quality in Albanian online media. Based on content monitoring in 18 online media, 15 qualitative interviews with media executives and journalists, and a survey with 74 members of the new audience, the study builds two original indicators, the Click Index (KI) and the Quality Index (QI), to measure sensationalism practices and basic reporting standards in a structured way.
The findings show that click-oriented practices are widespread, but not uniformly so: more performance-oriented media favor emotional headlines and dramatization, while investigative and fact-checking media maintain higher levels of IC. Hybrid models exist between these two poles, especially in consolidated media.
A central finding of the analysis is that the relationship between clickability and quality is neither linear nor automatically conflictual: some media manage to combine attractive headlines with editorial standards, while the problem appears when the logic of performance begins to dominate over verification, context, and editorial control.
Interviews with media executives, editors, and journalists revealed that Albanian newsrooms operate under simultaneous pressures of high publishing pace, SEO, algorithmic logic, and economic uncertainty, and that algorithmic pressure has gradually become part of the editorial process itself, not simply an external factor.
The survey with the young audience revealed an important paradox: most respondents recognize and criticize clickbait, but at the same time continue to consume it, especially in the short visual formats that dominate TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube.
Overall, the findings identify five main operating models in Albanian online media that show that newsrooms, platforms and audiences operate today in an interdependent system, where the future of quality journalism depends on the ability of newsrooms to balance digital performance without reducing journalism to a mere short-term product for clicks./ acqj.al
