From training to field journalism – 2017–2025 | 9 generations | 120+ young journalists
For eight years, the Investigative Journalism Laboratory was one of the fundamental programs of the Albanian Center for Quality Journalism for the formation of the new generation of investigative journalists in Albania.
Launched in 2017 with the support of the United States Embassy in Tirana, the program was designed for journalism and communications students and young professionals who wanted to develop their skills in investigative journalism. Participants were trained in research methodologies, fact-checking, the use of public sources and documents, interviewing, legal and ethical aspects of journalism, and the production of investigative stories.
Not just training
From the beginning, the Lab was conceived as a hands-on program.
Participants did not stop at classroom exercises, but developed ideas, researched documents, built resources, and worked on real stories of public interest under the mentorship of journalists and media professionals.
As the program developed, the Laboratory expanded into data journalism, multimedia production, mobile journalism, and new digital formats.
9 generations. Over 120 young journalists.
By the end of the program in 2025, the Laboratory had developed into nine generations and contributed to the training of more than 120 young journalists.
For many of them, the Laboratory was the first contact with a complete investigative process: from the initial idea, to research, verification and publication.
A program that also shaped the ACQJ
The lab wasn't just a training program for young journalists. It also influenced the way ACQJ itself developed.
The experience gained over these years became the basis for the Center's investigative editorial staff, professional internship programs, documentary production, multimedia journalism, and subsequent initiatives to support young journalists.
Although the Lab ended in 2025, its model, learning through real journalism, continues to be part of ACQJ's work.
