The Venice Commission, politics and the desecration of media freedom

Politics often obscures the truth, manipulating media narratives to serve partisan interests. The Venice Commission's recent opinion on constitutional decisions highlights how political influence distorts facts, undermines media freedom and undermines democracy.

The complex relationship between politics and media freedom has again been put in the spotlight due to the way the last opinion of the Venice Commission on the implementation of the decisions of the Constitutional Court in Albania has been treated. This case evidences the intervention of politics in the media editorial offices and the danger this brings for the freedom of the media and the right information of the public.

The report of the Venice Commission, approved on December 6-7, 2024, clearly emphasizes essential principles such as the obligation to implement the decisions of the Constitutional Court and the limitation of the role of the Assembly to not implement these decisions. The Constitutional Court is considered the final authority, and any deviation from the implementation of its decisions seriously undermines the rule of law.

In the case of deputy Olta Xhaçka, the refusal of the Assembly to act according to the decisions of the Constitutional Court creates a disturbing precedent. However, the Commission's opinion was interpreted differently by political parties and the media, manipulating the content for propaganda purposes. Through documents distributed by the PR of the ruling party, newsrooms were guided on how to report opinion, often taking phrases out of context and misinforming the public.

This approach has serious consequences for democracy and public information. When the media is manipulated by politics, citizens lose the ability to judge independently and risk normalizing lies. To restore trust and integrity in the media, a commitment to editorial independence and respect for the truth is necessary.

Key Points of Analysis:

  • Constitutional Obligation: The decisions of the Constitutional Court are final and binding on all state authorities, including the Assembly.
  • Policy Impact: Albanian media was influenced by political pressure, manipulating the opinion of the Venice Commission.
  • Consequences for Society: Media manipulation undermines democracy and makes truth a relative and irrelevant concept.
  • Role of Media: In order to protect media freedom and democratic principles, fair and independent public information must be guaranteed.

This analysis underlines the importance of a free and honest media as the foundation of a functioning democracy. To read the full analysis, https://ina.media/2024/12/26/komisioni-i-venecias-politika-dhe-perdhosja-e-lirise-se-medias/
