In Albania, those that are considered as natural areas with special values and with a perspective for the development of tourism have been affected by the construction of small hydropower plants for years.
Some of them sprouted there before these areas were declared protected and other HPPs appeared there after these areas gained their status, and now, more than 61 HPPs are built or planned within the Protected Areas. Protection.
Protests, objections, arrests and court proceedings have been the result of the confrontation for the basic needs of local populations and efforts to preserve the ecosystem.
For the National Agency of Protected Areas, the approval of new borders is expected to improve the situation, as environmental organizations and experts oppose the government's decision with the argument that it paves the way for further development projects that damage the environment.
