Water quality in Albania, public health alarm

In this episode of “Table Talk”, Erjon Kalaja, a water resources management expert at the H2H Foundation, is invited. The conversation brings the alarming results of the “Active Water II” monitoring campaign, which show that almost all reservoirs and lakes monitored in Albania have high bacterial loads.

Kalaja explains that the main causes are sewage discharges, agricultural waste and uncontrolled construction near lakes, warning that pollution is seriously threatening public health. He brought the extreme example of Vijës e Ngjalës, where Escherichia coli bacterial loads were recorded 420 times above normal, a consequence of continuous sewage and industrial waste discharges.

Albania, according to Kala, is "light years away from EU standards."
