Over 48,000 Albanians do not know how to read or write Albanian, according to the latest census data. 44% of the illiterate are people with disabilities, while the majority are over 35 years old. While illiteracy has seen a slight decrease over the years, the figures show a profound cultural and social challenge. The phenomenon is not just a statistic, but an issue affecting national identity, as language remains the foundation of a nation.
